The Idea Factory is designed to help you discover a never ending source of ideas while you expand your toy photography skills. As we progress through the various challenges we will also take a deep dive into why we create. What is the source of each persons individual inspiration.

Each week I will provide you with a photo challenge based on a particular skill or story telling technique. The resulting photos are presented to the group for feedback and reflection. The goal of The Idea Factory is to explore:

  • Where ideas come from.
  • How to connect deeply with your audience.
  • New toy photography techniques.
  • The creative journey and what might be standing in your way.
  • How to jump start your creativity.

Sharing the images that are created is an integral part of growing as a photographer. Understanding how your creative ideas land and how to push each image a little farther is how we grow as artists. My groups are safe and supportive to ensure that everyone feels heard and seen.

We will explore the following ideas and skills:

  • Choosing a toy that reflects you.
  • Motion
  • Special Effects
  • IP crossovers and mash-ups.
  • Use of color to elicit an emotion.
  • Self portraiture through the lens of toy photography

If you have to choose one workshop to help you with your creativity in photography (not just toys), this is the one you should take. Shelly is a wealth of knowledge and has a fun teaching style. She is well prepared for each class, providing valuable resources and thoughtful feedback. Over the 12 weeks, Shelly led the group through some activities designed to push us out of our comfort zone. These activities allowed me to improve as a photographer and grow as a creative person. – Mary M.
