A year in boats
What! There’s a 2027 calendar already?? Yes – the 2027 calendar is here and available for purchase! While 2026 was my love letter to bikes, 2027 is my love letter to the Pacific Northwest, water and reflections.
And just like last year, it’s filled with alternative ‘holidays’ to bring more joy and smiles into your year.
Soon after I finished the calendar of bicycles I knew that I would be tackling boats and water next. Why boats? Because water has been a continuing thread in my photography since my earliest images. With boats as my subject, I get to explore water, reflections and the surrounding beautiful bokeh. And never have to clean or store an actual boat.
All my favorite places
I loved that taking on this subject gave me permission to hang out in all my favorite places. These included my favorite puddle, nearby wetlands and mountain lakes that can only be reached by hiking several miles.
Not only was I able to capture images that I’m sure will be some of my all time favorites. But I also created many outstanding memories.
Even if they are imaginary
Not every photo was taken in nature. Some stories can only come to life in my studio. Although I do love the challenge of creating scenes that feel like they might have been captured outdoors.
Ultimately it doesn’t matter if the photo was taken outdoors or in a studio. I know that an image succeeds if I create an emotional response with both my viewer and myself.
Of course I’m thrilled when happy little accidents occur in any set-up. Like in this image of Mr & Mrs Claus. I didn’t notice the cookie peeking over the edge of the boat until after I started editing. Its moments like this that fill my heart with joy.
So hard to choose!
Choosing the final images is always hard. Whenever I remove an image from the final set, it feels a little like “killing my babies”. But I try to look at the big picture. Which images reflect the feel of individual months. Some of these images I ended up choosing feel more universal – like February, April and December. While other months, such as March and September, the images are of a more personal nature.
Ultimately I hope that all the images have some universal appeal. No matter how dark and stressful the world may feel – there is always magic to be found if you take a moment to look.
Stumbling around in the dark
Creating large scale (for me) projects feels a little like stumbling around in the dark. When I start out with a prompt, be it bikes or boats, I have no idea where I will land at the end. But I’m so grateful for the learning experience along the way. Like all large projects, there’s room for improvement. I already know what changes I will make in future years.
But for the moment I will enjoy my finished project. I know this calendar will bring joy and smiles to all who hang it proudly in their home or office. Even if 2027 feels so very far away.
